The Bugs We Wanted in our House

During the first week of June M convinced me to buy some praying mantis eggs.  The garden center said they would be great for our garden and M said it would be a once-in-a-life experience (seriously) to watch them hatch.
They sat quite still in our living room window until a few days after we put them in a jar (like this).  Then, on June 19th (to be exact) before the kids headed up to bed I notice a few hopping around in one of the jars.  About 8 hatched from that egg case.

Then, right before I went to bed (around 10:30), I noticed the craziness starting to happen in the other jar.

I have never seen anything quite like it...

Within about 30 minutes the jar was filled with praying mantids.

We dumped them into our flowers. (So they wouldn't start to eat each other!)
The next morning the kids had so much fun finding and holding them.

We can still find them quite easily.

And here are a few of the other insects we've been checking out. :)

Five for the Week

1.  Last week was the last official week of school for T, so we spent some time working on cards for teachers.  Oh, and for Father's Day for grandparents.  And this one is pretty sad, but also Mother's Day cards for grandparents too.  (Better late than never?)

2.  In preparation for summer, we found some new music that gets T's toes tapping.

3.  Our Praying Mantids hatched!  At 10:30 at night.  Since they were her idea (and she paid for half ;), she got to stay up to watch the show.  (We tried to wake up T, but we're pretty sure he was sleep walking. :)

4.  She STILL loves to wear things on her head.  (This is her "blue hair.")

5.  On Friday T "graduated" from kindergarten.  What an amazing gift his class has been this year.
Some of his best friends.

It was a pretty great week. :)

"There's Nothing You Could Do To Be Better"

A bit late (but better than never ;), wishing a Happy Father's Day to the special guys in our life--Daddy, Grandpa, Pop and Grandpa Taylor. :)

T came home with a treasure trove of goodies for Daddy including an apron (top, left) and a few hand-written books full of gems.

M added this note:

T could pretty much not love J any more than he does right now.  It's crazy sweet.  The other night they were praying and J said something about wanting to learn how to be a better daddy and T said, "Daddy, but there's nothing you could do to be a better daddy.  You're already the best."
(Watching the Praying Mantids beginning to hatch.)

And that he is. :)

Five for the Week

Last week was terribly dismal.  Heavy, dark skies all around.

1.  It produced a bumper crop of yard mushrooms.

2.  There was a lot of block play.  (Tower by yours truly. ;)

After watching this, T spent a long afternoon making his own domino tracks.

3.  We celebrated Beza's birthday with friends a week early.  (With the most delicious cupcakes graciously made by our pastry chef friend. :)

4.  T had curriculum night as his school with a few Father's Day songs, too.  They did a butterfly play.  (Those are compound eyes and a proboscis.)

He told us that his favorite part of Kindergarten (besides the playground) was writing letters to one of his best friends, Hannah.
(Funny.)

5.  And soccer is over for another season!  (M is expressing how happy we are to have our Saturdays back! :)

Thankful that this new week is starting off with sunny skies--yay!

They Were Here (2)

(More) Evidence of these fleeting days with little people all around...

Sometimes this parenting business is hard...BUT, I'm so thankful for the little people who fill my days.
