High Five for Friday (Spring Break)

1.  I'm pretty sure that's the epitome of Spring Fever.  Over the weekend there was still snow on the ground and T wanted to go outside in his swimming gear.

2.  Spring Break started a little rough.  J and I have (still) nasty cough colds (as the small crowd calls them).  The text message shows my super compassionate side.  I might sometimes think it's funny when grown-ups get ear infections.

3.  There was no school this whole week.  We were also van-less until yesterday afternoon.  (A few weeks ago the van had an unfortunate meeting with a deer. :(  )  So...we have done a lot of crafting this week.  We felted these eggs.

4.  Another day we colored some eggs.

5.  And while J has the van today, we've been packed into the car like this.  M's expression pretty accurately captures how she feels about the close quarters.

BUT, we actually made it to the park today!
It was sunny and warm-ish and so very needed! :)

Wishing you a very Happy Easter Weekend!

We Ditched TV

Actually, we just ditched the whole cable/satellite deal.  Not to worry, Beza still gets her almost daily fix of Elmo and Abby. :)  And thanks to the internet, Netflix and Amazon Prime we hardly miss a thing.

What We've Been Reading and Watching This Winter

Books
Marie-Grace and Cecile (American Girls)
Abe Lincoln at Last! (Magic Tree House)

(Working on art while listening to Tales From the Odyssey.)

Audio Books
(from Audible.com and the library)
Tales From the Odyssey (Homer) by Mary Pope Osborne (Volumes 1-3)

(Watching The Electric Company.)

Movies
Fox & The Child (Highly recommend!)

And me?

I've been reading:

Random Read:
(Really, really good.  Seriously--where was I when I was learning this stuff in school?)

Which lead me to watch:
(I had no idea the CCC built most of the state parks I grew up going to.)

And yesterday I saw something about Irena Sendler on facebook.
I was inspired by her story and wanted to know more so I watched:
(and then I just wanted to snuggle up with the little people in my life...)

Funnies: "Impossible!"

Over the weekend I was reading Dr. Seuss' One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish to Beza (a new book to her).

We got to the part about three fish in a tree.  It goes something like--"Fish in a tree?  How can that be?"

She blurted, "Impossible!"

So unexpected and perfect and hilarious. :)

Five on Friday

1.  T-man has been busy growing his head this winter.  Time for a new bike helmet that doesn't smash his brain.

2.  I "lightly" straightened Beza's hair (with my flat iron) just to see how it would look.  Then, in a moment of braveness or sheer ignorance, I decided to even it all up and I cropped the bottom layer to give her a cute little bob.  (Concurrently making a single ponytail impossible for a bit.  As my mom always says, "No worries--hair grows!" :)

3.  M dressed T one day this week in this handsome ensemble.

4.  I think the only reason he let her do that and ditched his usual super-hero T "uniform" is because J was away in Texas this week and he was trying to look like his favorite person in the whole wide world.  Also about J being away--he took a rental car to the airport.  This is noteworthy only because M has become completely obsessed with license plates and the rental was sporting a TN plate--it was an endless topic of conversation.  (J just came back bearing a TX license plate magnet for her--it couldn't be more perfect.)

5.  Just one more week of Hip Hop.  And then?  Soccer!

Bonus:
We also had a (our last?) snow storm on the last day of winter.  Great gobs of snowflakes.

I tried to capture it landing on the birds.

Of which we had many visitors that day.  (My favorite.)

And this pair is stunning.

As are these two.
(We're completely fascinated by the iridescent pink/yellow patch on its shoulders.)

Have a wonderful weekend!

Funnies: The One Where the Leprechaun Snuck Up On Us

We are those parents--the ones who don't "do" the traditional Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy.  But we do talk about them as characters that celebrate something bigger and we definitely have fun celebrating all of the traditions of the holidays (characters and all).

But we didn't see the leprechaun coming.  After a very lengthy bedtime conversation this week it became apparent that T thinks these green-wearing (human-sized--according to T) creatures are real and that they are out to do all kinds of mischief in our house.

He looked for evidence of their merry-making and when he didn't find enough he decided to join their ranks.

M: What I would like to know is--how did my shoe get in my shirt drawer?
T: T-the-Leprechaun did it! (Hugest smile.)

Me: Umm...who put a towel in the sink and then washed their hands on top of it?!
T: (Proudly) T-the-Leprechaun!
(That would also be the one where T-the-Leprechaun gets into a bit of trouble with the Mommy of the house. ;)
(The toilet paper on the edge of the sink is another T trick.)

Bathmats in the tub, soap hidden in cupboards, chairs turned around backwards, freshly washed strawberries under the table, doors locked--T-the-Leprechaun has been very, very busy.

Despite all of the hijinks, T-the-Leprechaun is quite a charming character. ;)
(Who, thankfully, can now go into hiding for another year!)

A Glimpse of Two (and-a-half)

Over the past few weeks (and even months) Beza has been entertaining us with her words and songs.

Catching it on video or trying to share it with a friend, though, is quite tough. ;)

But in a rare moment, I actually captured a bit of her songs this week.

(She even sang them REALLY loudly!)

(Her "Music, please!" introduction comes from this Elmo version of the ABC's.)

Way back in the fall she called herself "Ba-ba" so we started singing "Baa-Baa Black Sheep."  (And after months of trying, it's finally caught on camera.)

She also loves to count.  When we go to the grocery store she shouts (literally) out the aisle number.  (She also points out all of the thermometers--she calls them "clocks."  I never knew there were so many! ;)

And just this week she has fallen in love with Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear.  She reads it out loud and knows all of the characters before turning the page.  (It's mostly remarkable because it's actually a book that we pulled out from a forgotten book basket and she only heard it twice before she started "reading" it.)

It's definitely fun to watch her personality (her spicy "passion" and humor) as she learns how to talk more and more.

Taste of Spring (Easy Coconut Macaroons)

Making these delicious and "can't wait for spring" Coconut Macaroons on this VERY rainy day.
(A rainy day that just has to be turning the grass green!;)

High Five (or Ten) for Friday

1.  Last weekend J's parents came to celebrate T's 5th Birthday.  A weekend that included, of course, skiing (at their first BIG mountain.).

An edible Spider-Man cake. (Remember last year?)

2.  It was also a weekend full of these mysterious dudes.

3.  This week we've been dog-sitting.  When I say "we" what I really mean is that M is more in charge of this than we are.  Girl feeds her, gives her fresh water and makes sure we let her out when necessary.  In short, she makes us look good. ;)

4.  One of the many perks of having a close friend in the adoption world (Becca) is that she volunteered to do Beza's hair.  (She also makes us look good. ;)

5.  This morning we woke up to 6-8 inches of snow.

So, naturally, for breakfast we had 6. Snow Ice Cream and 7. Maple Snow Taffy
(I have lived a very long time without ever having maple syrup candy.  It totally does not taste like maple at all!  It's like delicious caramel.  Amazing!)

8. To burn off all that sweetness we headed out in the snow.  But not Beza because...

("Make me cry!")

(9. Sidenote: I make them wear these old socks over their wrists to keep the snow off of their skin.)

10.  Then we spent the rest of the morning building snow mazes.

And now everyone is resting. :)

Have a great weekend!

Addictions As Of Late

I've been eating this by the bowlful--multiple times a day.

I blame the lettuce.
Fresh lettuce, in the winter, in the northeast.  No way!

With this oh-so-simple and so fresh salad dressing.
1/2 of a freshly squeezed lemon, 1/4 cup of olive oil and salt and pepper to taste.  Topped with a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese.

Addicting.

As is finger-knitting apparently.  A friend posted a how-to and yesterday M & T learned the fine art of using their fingers to knit.

And the markers on those little fingers?  It's from these insane Crystal-Effects Window Markers.

They start out wet and hard to see and then the ink starts to crystalize like ice.  It is so much fun!
